A Lingua Do Mar
Short film 15'03
A Lingua do Mar is a short-movie shot in Nazaré, a small fishing village on the Atlantic coast of Portugal, north of Lisbon. Documentary and fiction meet through four stories; questioning the connection people maintain throughout the generations between life and death, reality and fiction.
A Lingua do Mar was first and foremost a sociological and anthropological study of the narrative in Portugal. Since childhood, I have been fascinated by the way my family and friends tell a story: whether it is when they relate facts, when they remember an event or when they tell a homeric anecdote. Strangely, in Portugal, in both types of speech, the narrative is always tinged with fantastic details, romance and tragedy. It is to be asked if this territory is not itself a supernatural land that transforms the daily lives of its inhabitants into extraordinary stories.
