A Lingua do Mar, Short-film, ECAL Diploma, June 2019
In Nazaré, on the Atlantic coast, the Duarte family is having lunch. At the same time Carlos Bragaia is heading home towards the coast after a long night at sea fishing for sardines. At only 25 years old, he is the youngest captain the village has ever known. While the elders remember the "all too many" friends who perished at sea; the Triunfador breaks the gigantic waves of the Atlantic, guided by Nossa Senhora, Poseidon and its thousand amulets. On the beach, Matilda is still fascinated by the supernatural stories, lying on the sand in Fatima's arms; they dream of fantastic creatures together. In the distance we can hear the Peixeiras singing.
A Lingua do Mar is a short-movie shot in Nazaré, a small fishing village on the Atlantic coast of Portugal, north of Lisbon. Documentary and fiction meet through four stories; questioning the connection people maintain throughout the generations between life and death, reality and fiction.
